Today we saw Mesa Verde to see how Native Americans lived on this Independence Day.
We all toured Spruce Tree House. It was a fairly decent hike down the 100-ft descent to the dwelling. It is the best preserved of the dwellings. It was constructed around 1211-1278. There are 130 rooms. We walked around the grain storage areas, courtyard, and ceremonial “kivas”. No one is really sure why these people left this area. There was a 25 year drought that may have caused them to move on to other areas for survival.
We came back to the RV for lunch then Ray and the boys toured Balcony House. This was a guided tour. The climb up and down was a little much for me. It involved climbing a 32 ft ladder, crawling through a 12ft long tunnel, and climbing up a 60-ft open cliff face with stone steps and two 10-ft ladders to exit. These people did not want visitors!
We ended our day a little earlier today. Ray and Preston made a Wal-Mart run to get a protective case for Preston’s iTouch. We had our now traditional Sloppy Joes for the 4th then watched a couple of episodes of 24.
